Chicken Scratch and Hieroglyphics

A Handwriting Clinic for the "Manuscriptionally" Impaired

Many of my students have asked for guidance to improve their handwriting.
On this page I've gathered some resources that I hope are some help.
But, remember there is no substitute for practice!
Top Tips for Improving Your Handwriting:
1. Keep a positive attitude
2. Practice regularly and have patience with yourself
3. Stay relaxed in body and mind
4. Use models, and learn the rules of basic cursive
5. Practice different grips and try to write using your elbow and shoulder without planting your wrist
6. Practice basic form drills whenever you can.
7. Use lined paper and turn your paper if that is more comfortable
8. Make letter forms that are complete and closed
9. Use consistent alignment, heights, width and spacing of letter forms
10.  Use a comfortable writing instrument, one that you like the line quality of and are comfortable with the "feel."

Try to find ways to make practice fun:
  • try copying favorite quotes, jokes or sayings.
  • use fun colored, scented or textured pens and markers
  • learn calligraphy
  • make pretend historical documents, look to illuminated manuscripts and older copied scrolls for inspiration.
  • make cards and notes as gifts
  • design a monogram
  • doodle your cursive drills in meetings, on the phone, etc.
  • try to "mimic" other styles

Once you have found some confidence and clarity from regular practice, be sure to embrace your own style!
